Frequently Asked Questions
Please reach out if you have a question that is not addressed!
-
How long are your sessions?
Sessions typically last 50-60 minutes.
-
What if I don't know what to talk about?
That’s okay! Sometimes we don’t know exactly where to start and that’s fine. We can begin by getting to know one another and I will help you identify what you’d like to work on.
-
Will I receive a diagnosis?
I will generally only make a diagnosis for the sake of facilitating your access to other services that may be helpful. A diagnosis is not often relevant to our work together, yet it can be useful in accessing care through larger systems.
If you are using insurance to pay for therapy, a diagnosis may be required.
If at any time I make a diagnosis, it will be a collaborative process. We will work together so that you can fully understand the diagnosis and receive the support you need. I am sensitive to the ways in which my profession has utilized diagnoses to harm people, and personally strive to reduce the potential for such harm.
-
What is your cancellation policy?
I require 24 hours notice that a session will be cancelled or rescheduled. Otherwise the full fee will be charged.
However, if I know ahead of time that we might need to cancel or reschedule, I will not charge the fee. For example, if you know you have a big event the following week, I usually say let's schedule our session and if you have to cancel that is OK, to give us the chance to meet if we can.
We can discuss each situation as it comes. I do my best to be flexible!
-
Can we meet remotely? In person?
For now, all sessions are offered remotely.
Sessions can take place via a secure video platform or via phone (like an old-school phone call). I am happy to do either.
-
What if I don't like therapy after all?
You can start and end whenever you like.
Preferably we will talk through the ending of our work together, to achieve a sense of closure and assess what you did and didn’t like about therapy. But you are never obligated to continue if you feel done.
-
What is an LMFT?
LMFT stands for Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist. This is a therapist who has completed their graduate education, has registered with the Board of Behavioral Sciences, complete 3,000 supervised hours, and passed a licensing examination.
I finished most of my hours in middle schools & preschools, and completed many hours in a private practice setting.
-
How do I schedule an appointment? How often do we meet?
First we can set up a free call to ensure we’re a good fit. Then we go from there.
We can plan on meeting once weekly to begin—consistent sessions help us get to know each other and make good use of our time together. Typically we will schedule sessions for the same day/same time each week, but if that doesn’t work for you, we can discuss other possibilities.
-
Is it ok if I am multitasking during sessions?
Yes, within reason! If you’re folding laundry or going for a walk during our session, no problem. If you’re driving around or cooking, I may ask that we resume our session when you are not distracted, for safety reasons.
-
What are your payment options?
I primarily use Ivypay for payments. It is a secure, HIPAA compliant platform designed for therapy. It accepts all types of cards, including HSA and flex spending cards.
I also accept cash and checks, and we can come up with an alternate payment model if there is ever a time that we need to.
-
Can we meet if I don't live in California?
I am registered as a therapist only in California and only work with people who live in California.
While I am based out of Northern California, I can work with people residing all over the state.
-
Do you do sessions in Spanish?
Yes!
I am fully fluent in English and Spanish and enjoy doing therapy in both languages.
